Whether you’re brand new to the sport, looking for a fresh way to stay active, or just curious about what all the chalk dust is about, this guide covers everything you need to know.
The city now has a handful of solid climbing gyms spread across different neighbourhoods, catering to everyone from absolute beginners to seasoned climbers. It’s become a go-to activity for students, young professionals, expats, and families alike.
And it makes sense. Indoor climbing is social, endlessly challenging, and works your whole body and brain at the same time. It’s one of the few workouts that genuinely doesn’t feel like a workout.
Bouldering is a form of climbing done without ropes or harnesses. You climb shorter walls, typically 3 to 5 metres, above thick crash mats, following colour-coded or numbered routes called problems. Each problem is a puzzle. You figure out the sequence of moves, try it, fall off, try again.
You don’t need a partner (though friends are a great addition), you don’t need experience, and your age doesn’t matter. All you need is good vibes!
Copenhagen has a growing number of climbing gyms to choose from. Blocs & Walls on Refshaleøen is the largest facility in the Nordics and offers both bouldering and rope climbing. Boulders has been part of the scene since 2009 with a loyal community behind it.
And then there’s Beta Boulders! With three locations across the city, it’s become a popular bouldering destination in Copenhagen.
Beta has three gyms, each with its own character.
Vanløse is the biggest with over 1,700 sqm of bouldering, a fitness area, yoga studio, co-working space, café, and a brand-new sauna and cold plunge!
Sydhavn sits right on the waterfront with great natural light and easy access by bike from the city centre.
Østerbro brings bouldering into one of Copenhagen’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, easy to fold into your day without trekking across town.
All three are drop-in friendly. No booking, no experience needed.
Absolutely, yes. Routes are numbered so you always know where to start. New to grading systems? Our guide to V-scale and Font scale grades breaks down exactly what those numbers and letters mean. Coming from another sport? Here’s why bouldering is a great alternative to CrossFit.
The walls are reset regularly, so there’s always something fresh to try. And if you want a more structured introduction, Beta offers beginner classes with small groups and friendly instructors.
Rent climbing shoes at the desk and you’re ready to go.
This is the thing that keeps people coming back more than the climbing itself.
Bouldering gyms have a uniquely social atmosphere where people cheer each other on, share tips, and hang around long after their session ends. At Beta Boulders, that community feel is baked into the design, with real cafés, regular events, and a crowd of regulars who’ll happily help you figure out the move you’ve been stuck on for twenty minutes.
And if you want to recover properly after a hard session, the sauna and cold plunge at Vanløse is genuinely worth it. Heat relaxes the muscles, the cold plunge resets the nervous system, and together they feel incredible. Open to both members and non-members!
So what are you waiting for? Drop in at Vanløse, Sydhavn, or Østerbro. Rent shoes if you need them, and get on the wall.
Making plans after hitting the wall? Stop by Kjær & Sommerfeldt if you’re looking for a good white Burgundy for dinner.
